Sensationserfolg „Professor Bernhardis“ in
London. Ans London wird gemeldel: Artux Schnitz¬
lers „Pxofessor Bernhardi“ fand anläßlich der Lon¬
döner Erstaufführung im Embassytheater eine sen¬
sationell begeisterte Aufnahme. „Professor Bern¬
hardi“ wurde hier vor einigen Jahren im Rahmen
einer Wohltätigkeitsmatinse in deutscher Sprache
aufgeführt. Abraham Sofaer, einer der hervorra¬
gendsten Charakterdarsteller der Londoner Bühne,
spielte damals den Professor und erntete den begei¬
sterten Beifall eines erlesenen Publikums. Diesmal
spielte er diese Rolle in der englischen Aufführung
und bot eine schauspielerische Leistung, die gegen¬
wärtig kaum von einem anderen Darsteller über¬
boten wird. Die starke Wirkung verdankte die Auf¬
führung aber vor allem der brillanten Regie Hein¬
sich Schnitzlers, der das Werk seines Vaters mit
aller Pietät für das Original und dabei mit allem
Verständnis für die Erfordernisse der erglischen
Bühne insgeniert hat.

At the Embassy there is an interesting
drama of debate called +PROFESSOR
BERNHARDI,“ translated by Louis Borell
and Ronald Adam from the German of
Schnitzler. We are apt to think of Schnitzler
as chieflg spinning the silken thread of Vien¬
nese comedy; this time he is emploved on
good, strong. ropy argument, as he indiets the
poisoning of professional lise in Austria br
political and sectarian intrigue. Dhe Professor,
à notable surgeon and a Jew, kceps à priest
from attending a dring girl, because she docs
not know that she is near the end, and the
sight ofthe priest is certain to give her the fear of death and so interrupt
her blissful ignorance of her doom. This little ineident is magnified by
religions rancour and anti-Semitie furg until it becomes the Bernhardi
Affair and reaches almost à Dreyfusite magnitude. The drama that
results is largely à matter of animated controversy and profuse argument
about the duties of priest, statesman, and doctor when contlicting calls
are made on conscience.
Schnitzler, thus engaged on
the drama of discussion, keeps
his eye onthe ball. There is
no sex interest, no gratuitous
comedy, nothing but stendy
pursuit of the truth. Mr.
Abraham Sofaer gives a firm
outline and a clear, strong
utterance to Bernhardi and
Mr. Ronald Adam does the
same for à pompons politicinn.
We do not often get the plar
of serions debate nowadays;
so the Professor (withont a
love storz') makes an agree¬
able and interesting change.
