PROFESSOR BERNHARDI“ AT THE
* PHGNIX.“
(Brighton Standard special)
Twenty men and only one woman appear
in the cast of“ Professor Bernbardi“ at the
Phcenix Theatre. Louis Borell, the young
Dutch actor, who has received such favour¬
able notices from English critics, and Ronald
Adam, are responsible forthe English version
of this brilliant play by the late Arthur
Schnitzler. His son, Heinrich, produced it.
Itis a play which heldtbefrst night audience
in its grip, for not a sound could be heard in
the auditorium while the actors were on the
stage. The play deals with lile in a -dical
institute in Vienna, and centres round an
incident between the Jewish doctor-director
and a Roman Catholic priest. There was.
little action and much talk, but the long
conversationsnever for a moment lapsed into
dullness. It is a good play, and the acting
throughout was of a high standard. Par¬
ticularly fine was Abraham Sofaer’s interpre¬
tation of Professor Bernhardi. Itis impossible
to mention each member of the cast separ¬
ately although every actor deserves it, but
Pother outstanding performances were given
by Ronald Adam, Leonard Sachs, Earle
Grey, John Gareide and Alan Wheatley. The
serious playgoer; whether Gentile or jew,
should not miss this play: it is worth seeing.

Abraham Sofaer’s acting as the#
Jewish doctor who is the victim of
religious persecution is a distinguished
performance. Schnitzler was himself a
doctor. His plays are notable for
piquant and graceful dialogue. His son
is the producer of" Professor Bern¬
hardi.“
Another foreign playwright who was
a doctor was Chekhov, whose“ Seagull“
is still doing excellent business at the#
New. He began to write for the comic!
papers when he was still a student. He#
died at the age of 44, long before thei
advent of the Bolsheviks.
