To the Theatrical Profession:—The
HERALD’s accounts of #first nights' are
invariably cabled to Paris for publication
on the following day in the European
edition.
No stranger dramatie combination can
well be imagined than the two plays that
were grouped in one bill at the Lyceum
Theatre last night. It was the beginning
of the third week of Mrs. Fiske's en¬
gagement, and the plays offered were Mr.
Arthur Schnitzler’s “grotesquerie“ called
The Green Cockatoe,“ translated by
Messrs. Philip Littell and George Rublee,
followed by Mr. Gerhart Hauptmann’s
vdream poem“Hannele,“ adapted into
English by Miss Mary J. Safford and Mr.
Percy MacKaye.
Both plays have been scen here before,
and both are well worth seeing, though in
thls combination they scarcely add to each
other’s effectiveness. But hoth were ex¬
cellently acted, and credit is due Mrs!
