O
ERSONALITIES — and the
#search for them—remain the
most interesting feature of the
theatrical world at the moment.
The value which artists like Diana
Wynyard, John Gielgud, the new
German star, Lucie Mannheim, and
others are having for the box-offices
ates that playgoers are once
ir
being attracted as much by
alities as by the plays them¬
in some cases, more 80.
is why managers and pro¬
are now willing to postpone
ant productions rather than
them with casts which do
mpletely satisfy them.
rles B. Cochran has engaged
era star for his forthcoming
evue, which is to have its first
production in Manchester at Christ¬
mas timé.
Have a Guess
SHEis Irene Eisinger, the Con¬
tinental singer who has been
making so big an impression by
her work at the past two Glynde¬
bourne Opera Festivals.
As I announced some time ago.
Mr. Cochran had originally engaged
er for the principal röle in his pro¬
ected Broduction of the musical
version of Schnitzler’s“ Liebelei
1
" But as THave been unable t0 find
suitable young men or a suitable sou¬
brette for the lmportant röle of
Mizzi who are available just now
I have decided to postpone this pro¬
duction, C. B. told me. “ Therefore,
I have persuaded Miss Eisinger to
take part in my new revue.
44
She will have some good music
sing—some Offenbach, a little
Mozart, and, I hope, something new
our most brilliant young
by.
composer.“
Mr. Cochran cannot mention this
composer’s name yet, but this de¬
scription should make guesses easy.)

GTHE Barrie-Bergner play, pro¬
visionally entitled The Two
Farmers, opens in Edinburgh in
February, with the West End produc¬
tion following shortly after; the new
play which James Bridie is writ¬
ing for Renee Houston, with
lyrics and music by Lorenz Hart and
Richard Rodgers, has been booked to
open in Manchester at Easter; and
the long-awaited musical version of
Schnitzler’s “ Liebelei.“ re-entitled
Dallfänce, winl be produced in
August—also in Manchester for the
first time.
My plans for this production are
shaping at last, Mr. Cochran tells
me. Next spring Oscar Straus,
the composer, Edward Knoblock,
John Hastings Turner, and I shall
get together far from the madding
crowd and complete the job of put¬
ting flesh on as magnificent a
skeleton of a musical play as I have
ever had in my hands.
Straus is enthusiastic over the
new synopsis which I have sub¬
mitted to him.“
With a spectacular new revue, the#
first new Barrie play for 16 years,
two musical plays, and a pantomime
on his hands, Mr. Cochran is evi¬
dently not going to have a lazy year.
