A New Director.
When Bela Blau was first consid¬
ering making the production of Ar¬
thur Schnitzlers Anatol with Jo¬
seph Schildkraut, which he will pre¬
sent at the Lyceum Theater on Fri¬
day evening, he said the whole mat¬
ter depended on finding a director
who had a feeling for the gay and
careless spirit of Vienna embodied
in the play. Schildkraut replied that
he knew the very man for the job
Gabriel Beer Hofmann.
Schildkraut had met him in Holly-
wood while both were in the talking
pictures, the former acting in Show
Boat" and other pictures, and the
latter assisting F. W. Murnau in di¬
rection. And it is Mr. Beer-Hof¬
mann who has now staged "Anatol.
The Schnitzler play will be his in¬
troduction to New York as a direc¬
tor, though he has staged a number
of plays in Vienna. A son of Richard
Beer-Hofmann, Austrian playright,
he was brought up in the midst of
the theatrical life of Vienna. His
father is a close friend of Schnitzler
and both father and son have staged
a number of plays for Reinhardt.
Last summer while in Vienna he
prepared a successful production of
Outward Bound" and began making
a dramatization of the novel, "The
Valiant. Once before he has had
his hand in a production of "Anatol
when he staged the "Christmas Shop¬
ping" scene for Reinhardt. In Hol¬
lywood, he assisted in the making of
Sunrise" and "The Four Devils.
He is now special dramatic corre¬
spondent in New York for the Vienna
Neue Freie Presse.
