IIT SEEMS a long time since I last
wrote about Austrian publications of
(note. But this spring has really been
rather a barren one both in the theater
and the book market. Wherever arej
the young authors, so strenuously
sought by managers and publishers—if
one may believe them? I cannot for
the life of me recollect—or find in my
notes—a single success by a new#
author!
The Burgtheater brought out Arthur
Schnitzler’s latest poetic tragedy,
something in the style of his" Bea¬
trice.“ It is called“ The Walk to thei.
Lake.“ Sweet and sumptuous vers
telling of bitter and despairing wis¬
dom—the sneering wisdom of disa:
pointed old age, not the smiling onc c
resignation or serenity. Respect for thel
eminent writer, surely the greatest of
bis generation, Probäbig prompted thef
performance.
But it was not a happy evening, and
we may doubt whether it would not
have been best to leave the play to the
shadow life of the book. The acting of!
the tortuous and turbid thing was
shadowy and uncasy, and no wonder.
