A CERMAN PLAY REVIVED
The only new productions in London
this weck will be Arthur Schnitzler’s
Professor Bernhardt, which Will be given“
at ihe Embassy Theatre to-night in a
translation from ihe German by Mr.
FRonald Adam and Mr. Louis Borrell, and
Thistledown, an English version of a
Swedish play by Miss Selma Lagerlof,
which the Chanticleer Company are to
present at their theatre in Clareville Street
on Thursday, with Miss Clare Greet and
Mr. Hubert Gregg in the principal parts.
The Schnitzler play was performed five
years ago by the Jewish Drama League,
with Mr. Abraham Sofacr as Professor
Bernhardi, ihe Jewish doctor who, for
strictly professional reasons, stands
between a dying woman and her priest.
Inthe Embassy revival Mr. Sofaer will
again be scen in the part of Bernhardi,
supported by, among others, Mr. John
Garside, Mr. Alan Wheatley, Mr. Leonard
Sachs, and Miss Anne Cotton. Mr. Hein¬
rich Schnitzler, son of the author, has
assisted in the production.
At Oxford on Wednesday Miss Nova
Pilbeam will play the part of Rosalind in the
O.U.D.S. production of 48 Von Like J1 in
Magdalen Grove. Miss Yvonne Rorie will be
scen as Celia, Mr Michael Denison as
Orlando, Mr. Val Rogers as Jaques, Miss
Caroline Bayly as Phoebe, and Mr. Jack
Irvine, who has designed most of the
costumes, as Touchstone. The producer will
be Miss Thea Holme, who has played several
parts for ihe O.U.D.S., including Ophelia in
Hamlel and Vasmin in Hassan.
Mr. Theodore Komisarjevsky, who produced
King Leur atthe Stratford-on-Avon Festival in
April, has agreed to direct Mme. Eugenie
Leontovich in Ankony und Cleopatra, which
will be presented in the autumn under her own
management. Mme. Leontovich made her
first appearance on the London stage last
year, when she played opposite Sir Cedric
Hardwicke in Tovarich.
THE BORGIA FAMILY
Miss Ernita Lascelles has drawn upon the
history of the Borgia family for the basis of
her new three-act comedy Lucretia, which the
New Shop Window is to present at the Arts
Theatre on Sunday evening and the following
Monday afternoon. Mr. Reginald Tate will
produce the play and appear in it, together
with Mr. Charles Maunsell, Mr. David Horne
Mr. Reyner Barton, Miss Winifred Evans, and
Miss Kathleen Boutall.
The New Bournemouth Repertory Com¬
pany, formed by Mr. Anthony Bazell and Mr.
Neison King, will begin its first season to¬
night at the Theatre Royal, Bournemouth,
wih Mr. Ivor Novello’s play Full Home.
Atthe Sheffield Repertory Theatre to-night
Mr. William Sherwood will produce his own
translation of Goldoni’s comed? La Locan¬
diera, under the title of Twar Time She Wed.
The heroine of the piece is an innkeeper’s
daughter, to whom the inn itself has been left.
She has numerous suitors for her hand.
Several mimes and spoken comedies will be
included in the first part of the programme 10
be presented at the Vaudeville Theatre on
Saturday, July 4, under the direction of Miss
Trene Mawer and Miss Rubv Ginner. Inthe
sccond part there will be Greek dances and
ballets.
The coloured singers the Mills Brothers
will head the Palladium programme to-night.
They will be supported by Mr. Max Miller
Mr. Teddy Brewn, the Three Sailors,
American comedians and acrobats, and Mr.
Bobby May, the juggler.
