Der Kaiser bei einer Aufführung des „Jungen
Medardus“
Wir erhalten eine interessante Nachricht:
Der Kaiser, der schen seit einigen Jahren sich vom Besuch
von Theatern und Vällen sernhen, wird am 6. Jänner im Burg¬
theater erscheinen, um einer Aufführung von Schnitzlers Drama
„Der junge Medardus“ beiznwohnen.
Das Stück, das bis nun immer vor ausverkauftem Hause ge¬
geben wurde, hat auch in Hofkreisen das lebhafteste Interesse erregt,
was darin zum Ausdruck kam, daß fast alle in Wien anwesenden
Mitglieder des Kaiserhauses es sich ansahen. Der Thtonfolger Erz¬
herzog Franz Ferdinand und dessen Gemahlin, die Herzogin
von Hohenberg, wohnten schon der Premiere bei.

the Viennese during the last weeks before the
season has seriously opened, one only deserves
mention—that of the Spanish 'cellist, Casal.
Never before has any’cello performer obtained
such success in Vienna. The long-expected
singer from the Berlin Opera, Frida Hempel,
who enjovs so much popularity in the German
capital, disappointed the general hopes of
1a large audience. To be in theswim in Vienna
ät is imperativeto have seen Arthur Schnitzler s
plav,“ The Junge Medardus.'' Schnitzler is
the most talented among moderif Austrlan
writers, and also the most successful. The
melkal career to wirich he was destined by his

written a series of fine literary pieces. He has ##
also published several much-read psychological
novels. Although the plot of the “ Young

Medardus it is casyto recognise Snap, the in¬
tended assasein of Napoleon at Schönbrunn.

his work, Pie performance lasts five hours,
seventy #, 200 supers appear in the seven¬
teen chunges caused by the revolving stage.
The apparatus demanded for this play is so
cosely that crowdod houses scarcely repay the
